Oktoberfest

Columbus, September 21, 2009

The official “Breaking of the Pretzel” will take place at noon September 21st in front of the Schmidt’s Restaurant und Sausage Haus in the heart of German Village.
This annual event kicks off a week of decorating, building and cooking in preparation for the “Tapping of the Keg” on September 25th that signifies the start of the Columbus Oktoberfest.
“It has been a whirlwind 10 weeks of trying to plan a party for 40,000 of your closest friends” said Geoff Schmidt. This year’s Oktoberfest will offer a lot of new and exciting things.
The Nationwide “vier meiler” brat trot, race walk will kick off with the tapping of the keg. The course will be four miles that will take racers through the festival, the Ohio Expo Center, up around Crew stadium and end back in the heart of Oktoberfest. We expect 500 runners for the inaugural event.
Mount Carmel Health Kinderplatz area will feature free inflatibles for the children to bounce around in as well as a carousel and a trackless train, COSI on Wheels will be there as well.
On Saturday from Noon-4:00 Katie Cavanaugh, a 12 year old girl from Westerville will be holding a bake sale to raise money for the Bosco the Police Dog recovery fund.
The Giant Eagle Marketplatz will feature arts and crafts, The German Import Haus, Schmidt’s Fudge House, displays from the Columbus Historical Society and the German Village Society, and a cornhole tournament. Virtually continuous entertainment and lots of great food and beverages for everyone will be found in the Warsteiner Bier Hall and the Schmidt’s Prost Hall.
